Sudan: More Universities Pledge Support For Nigerian Students

Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa (left), and the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye.

More universities have offered educational supports for the displaced Nigerian students evacuated from the war-torn Sudan.

The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, (NiDCOM), Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, acknowledged the show of interests of the universities in absorbing the returnee Nigerian students.

This was contained in a release e-signed by the NiDCOM Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahmon Balogun.

So far, Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Summit University, Offa, Kwara State and American University, The Gambia have indicated their interest in the displaced students.

Dabiri-Erewa made this known when she received the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, in her office in Abuja.

The NiDCOM boss gave an assurance that the message by the universities will be related to the returnee students.

She also assured that the students who are interested, will follow the due procedures in securing placement in the universities.

“We were with JAMB and JAMB has given conditions, process and guidelines to follow which I am sure you aware of.

“The key thing is even if they have come to you and you have admitted them, we will need that letter from JAMB saying JAMB has given them admission letters.

“This is necessary in order for us to avoid situations that after graduation they can’t go for national youth service.

“I thank you for the offer you are making to Nigerian students who have returned from Sudan.

“I also thank you for saying you will give a generous concession for them,” she told the vice chancellor of Igbinedion University.

Earlier, Professor Ezemonye explained that the institution have programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other professional bodies.

He commended the NiDCOM boss for the wonderful job she has been doing, hence the need for the visit to discuss modalities for placement of the returnee students.

The co-founder, Friends of Nigeria, Europe, a non-governmental organisation led by Abiodun Odunuga, said he received offers for scholarships from the American International University, The Gambia, for a number of the returnee students from Sudan.

He said the scholarships received were for students undergoing practical courses and who were willing to go to The Gambia.

He added that they were also for students willing to participate in the Paris Graduate School for online courses, including Human Resources and Business Management.

Similarly, Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, also indicated interest in the absorption of the student evacuees from Sudan into the different academic programmes for easy integration.

Meanwhile, the NiDCOM boss has commendee the selfless and patriotic zeal of all stakeholders in the reabsorption process of all Nigerians, especially the students evacuated from the war-torn Sudan.

Dabiri-Erewa appreciated Air Peace, Azman Air, Max Air, Tarco Airline, Dangote Foundation and the MTN Foundation.

She also acknowledged all educational institutions that have offered to re-absorb the returnee students to complete their education in Nigeria.

So far, as at Thursday, 2,246 Nigerians have been evacuated from Sudan back to Nigeria in 12 batches, it was stated in the release.
