First Time in 3 Years, Nigeria’s Distribution Capacity Hits 5,345MW in May –Minister of Power

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said that Nigeria’s power transmission and distribution capacity reached 5,345 megawatts in May. He explained that specifically on May 3, the nation transmitted and distributed 5,345MW instead of the usual 3,000MW to 3,500MW. He stated that such was the first time the country achieved such power distribution capacity in three years, adding that the increase in output clearly demonstrates the ministry’s dedication and efforts over the last nine months to increase production in the sector.

He assured that the Federal Government is determined in its target to achieve 6,000MW before the end of the year. According to a statement yesterday, the minister also said the FG remained un- relenting in its efforts to increase power services in the country. Adelabu said: “When it comes to generation capacity, 5000 megawatts (MW) of power was achieved in May for the first time in three years.

“Exactly on May 3, we generated, transmitted and distributed 5,345MW instead of the usual 3,000MW. “We all know what we passed through in February and March. But we rose to the occasion, and we made sure we changed the situation for the better. “Our target is to achieve 6,000MW before the end of this year for the first time in the history of Nigeria.

“We’ve improved grid generating capacity with the addition of 700MW in Geregu. “We are also proposing the inclusion of 3,000 utility scale solar power sources within the next 24 months to change the mix of our energy generation.”
