The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the Lagos State Health Scheme, Ilera-Eko.
This initiative aims to provide accessible, affordable, and equitable healthcare for all residents.
Speaking during a media parley to commemorate the 2024 Universal Health Coverage Day, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), highlighted the progress made since the enactment of the Lagos State Health Scheme Law in 2015.
She revealed that over 1.3 million residents have been enrolled in the Ilera-Eko scheme, which offers comprehensive healthcare services.
Dr. Zamba stressed that the state government views healthcare as a fundamental right, not a privilege.
“Universal Health Coverage is more than a global ideal; it is a basic human right. Investing in health strengthens society’s backbone, ensuring a productive workforce and fostering national resilience,” she stated.
Dr. Zamba outlined key milestones of the scheme, including its expanded benefits package, streamlined enrolment processes, and enhanced public awareness campaigns aimed at increasing accessibility.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently signed an Executive Order domesticating the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act.
This move mandates enrolment in Ilera-Eko for all Lagos residents, further solidifying the state’s commitment to UHC.
Dr. Zamba announced plans to embark on widespread public awareness campaigns to promote compliance with the mandatory health insurance law. She also highlighted efforts to leverage technology, expand healthcare provider networks, and maintain high-quality service delivery.
Dr. Zamba called on journalists to amplify awareness about Ilera-Eko. “Your platforms are critical in educating the public and ensuring that every Lagos resident understands their role in achieving UHC,” she urged.
Mrs. Adetoro Tayo-Adetoro, Head of Planning, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at LASHMA, outlined the scheme’s achievements.
She praised its affordability and extensive provider network, covering public and private healthcare facilities across all Local Government Areas.
