Otunba Gbenga Daniel Rejoices With Nigerian Navy’s 69th Anniversary, Praises Commissioning Of New Naval Assets

In an applaudable display of the country’s maritime development and relentless commitment to national security, the Nigerian Navy, alongside Otunba Gbenga Daniel, celebrated its 69th Anniversary with a top-class ceremony held at the Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) Quorra in Apapa, Lagos.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, His Excellency, Senator Otunba Engr. Gbenga Daniel, FNSE, FNAEng, who was in the company of other respected dignitaries, senior naval officers, government officials, and foreign envoys to witness the commissioning of freshly bought ships, helicopters, and futuristic naval technologies.

The high-profile event was further proof of the Navy’s positive strides towards strategic modernization, which strengthens Nigeria’s maritime domain awareness, boosts internal security and protects national economic interests, particularly within the Gulf of Guinea region.

Reacting, Senator Gbenga Daniel hailed the leadership of the Nigerian Navy for its impressive operational vibrancy, fleet renewal, and personnel capacity growth.

He declared that the celebration is not just another excuse to gather and make merry, but a testament to how far the Navy has come and its outstanding evolution that is worthy of emulation.

“This celebration is not just a commemoration of the past 69 years but a testament to the Navy’s enduring evolution and its pivotal role in defending Nigeria’s maritime sovereignty,” he said.

The freshly inducted assets include top-class offshore patrol vessels, multi-purpose combat helicopters, and coastal surveillance platforms – all tipped to curb naval operations piracy, crude oil theft, smuggling and other maritime challenges.

Also speaking, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, reiterated the Navy’s commitment to professionalism and innovation, noting that the commissioning will go a long way towards ensuring the Navy is well prepared ahead of potential regional threats.

According to him, the 69th anniversary provides an opportunity for the Nigerian Navy to reiterate its unwavering commitment to guaranteeing the safety of our waters, while contributing majorly to regional peace.

He stated that the Navy will stay focused on capacity building, platform acquisition, infrastructure, and improved welfare of both personnel and civilians, under his strategic objectives.

“This year’s anniversary offers an opportunity not only for reflection but also for rededication. The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in ensuring the safety of our waters and contributing significantly to regional peacekeeping operations,” he said.

At precisely 9:00 a.m., the naval ship cast off with chosen civilians onboard, embarking on a guided tour via the country’s territorial waters. Guests were treated to live demonstrations of maritime operations, including the deployment of naval assets and surveillance procedures used to secure Nigeria’s coastline and the Gulf of Guinea. This further emphasises the Navy’s operational excellence and technological development,

The Nigerian Navy was formed in 1956 and has since developed into a highly respected marine force in the whole of West Africa. 2025’s theme, “Securing the Maritime Commons for National Prosperity”, is in alignment with Nigeria’s ultimate goal of a safer, more secure and economically viable maritime environment.

Former Ogun State Governor and distinguished Nigerian engineer is an advocate for maritime growth who has repeatedly talked about the importance of a modern Navy to guarantee national security and economic prosperity.

The 69th Anniversary celebrations will not stop anytime soon, as other events are scheduled to happen all across Nigeria, including medical outreach programmes, naval symposiums, and inter-agency partnerships to foster military-civilian cooperation.
