The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has publicly declared his support for the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election. Obasa made this known during a political gathering in Lagos, where he described Hamzat as a competent and experienced leader capable of sustaining the developmental strides of the current administration. He emphasized Hamzat’s long-standing involvement in governance, noting his contributions both as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure and as Deputy Governor. According to the Speaker, continuity in leadership would be crucial to maintaining stability and ongoing projects in Lagos State. He urged party stakeholders and supporters within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to rally behind Hamzat, presenting him as a unifying figure with the capacity to lead the state effectively. Hamzat, who has served alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is widely regarded as a technocrat with deep knowledge of Lagos’ infrastructure and policy framework. While he has not formally declared his candidacy, Obasa’s endorsement is seen as a significant political boost that could influence party dynamics ahead of the primaries. Political observers note that endorsements from key figures like the Speaker often shape internal party alignments, especially in a politically strategic state like Lagos, where the governorship race is expected to be highly competitive. As the 2027 elections draw closer, more declarations and endorsements are anticipated, signaling the gradual build-up to what is expected to be a defining political contest in Lagos State.
