Tinubu Approves Fresh Military Hardware to Strengthen Offensive Against InsurgentsPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement of additional advanced military hardware to reinforce ongoing operations against insurgent groups following a strategic security review with top defence officials on Sunday.
The approval was granted after a high-level meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, and other service chiefs to assess the security situation across the country, particularly in the North-East and North-West where recent attacks on military formations have raised concerns within the defence establishment.
Officials familiar with the deliberations said the meeting reviewed recent incidents involving coordinated assaults by insurgent fighters on troops stationed in parts of Borno State and Katsina State, as well as the broader operational challenges confronting security forces in ongoing counter-insurgency campaigns.
The President reportedly emphasized the need to strengthen the operational capacity of the armed forces through modern equipment capable of providing tactical advantage on the battlefield. “Our troops must have the tools necessary to dominate the battlefield and protect innocent Nigerians,” a senior government official quoted the President as saying during the meeting.
Security sources indicated that the newly approved equipment package is expected to include a range of advanced platforms designed to enhance surveillance, mobility, and firepower for frontline troops engaged in operations against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
According to one defence official briefed on the decision, the procurement is intended to support a revised military strategy aimed at disrupting insurgent supply routes, strengthening intelligence gathering, and improving rapid-response capabilities in vulnerable areas.
“The objective is to restore clear tactical superiority for the armed forces,” the official said. “With better equipment and improved coordination among the services, troops will be able to respond more effectively to emerging threats.”
The security review also examined reports of renewed militant activity in remote communities and along strategic transport corridors in the affected states, with commanders presenting operational updates and recommendations to the President.
Military authorities say the recent attacks have demonstrated that insurgent groups continue to adapt their tactics, prompting the need for a combination of improved technology, stronger inter-agency coordination, and sustained offensive operations.
Another government source said the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing sustained logistical and financial support to the armed forces. “The safety of Nigerians and the protection of our territorial integrity remain non-negotiable,” the source quoted the President as saying.
The latest approval forms part of broader efforts by the federal government to strengthen the capabilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces as security agencies intensify operations to dismantle insurgent networks and stabilize communities affected by years of violence in northern Nigeria.
