Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed strong support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the President is performing creditably across all sectors of national governance. Speaking to journalists on Saturday after a courtesy visit to the State House in Abuja, the elder statesman issued a “pass mark” to the President’s leadership, noting that the current reforms are effectively addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges. Gowon explained that his visit was intended to appreciate the administration’s efforts and encourage the President to maintain the current trajectory of progress.
“I came to see him and to thank him for all the good works that he’s doing for the country. We had to look at all the good work that the President is doing and the progress that Nigeria is making economically and otherwise,” Gowon stated. When asked to identify specific areas that might require further improvement as the administration advances its agenda, the former military leader declined to single out any one sector, arguing instead that the President is managing a comprehensive and balanced approach to governance.
Addressing the range of national issues, the former Head of State questioned rhetorically, “Isn’t he doing the best he can all round? So there is no particular place, every other area; political, economic, social, etc.” He further observed that the country is witnessing steady progress under the current leadership and expressed personal satisfaction with the overall direction of the government. On the critical issue of national security, Gowon acknowledged the complexity of the current threats but maintained that the President is taking the necessary measures to ensure stability.
“And, of course, the major problem that we have today, the security area, he’s doing everything to deal with those for the good of all Nigeria,” Gowon noted. He emphasized that leadership requires a delicate balance of multiple priorities and that the President remains focused on safeguarding the nation’s broader interests. “He’s got to look after the interests of Nigeria in all areas, and I’m happy about that,” the elder statesman added, while expressing optimism that the government’s efforts would eventually secure the peace and stability that Nigerians deserve.
