Most Popular Things Named After Queen Elizabeth II

The Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport in France has decided to change its name to include ‘Elizabeth II’ as a tribute to the late queen. While this French airport is the only one named after her, Queen Elizabeth II has her name associated with various places and things worldwide. In the United Kingdom, she lends her name to The Queen’s Terminal at London Heathrow, several hospitals, and various buildings and landmarks.

In Valparaíso, Chile, there’s the Centro de Salud Familiar Reina Isabel II, and in Maseru, Lesotho, there’s the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. The Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre is in the Bahamas, while Edmonton, Alberta, has the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium. Vancouver, British Columbia, boasts the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and Montreal has the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. In Regina, Saskatchewan, there’s the Queen Elizabeth Power Station, while in Fiji, there’s the Queen Elizabeth Barracks. Sierra Leone has the Queen Elizabeth II Quay, and Eastern Cape, South Africa, has the Princess Elizabeth Graving Dock.

In New Zealand, you’ll find the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre & Memorial Hall in Tauranga and Queen Elizabeth Park in Christchurch. In Australia, the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law serve justice in Brisbane. Paris is home to the Marché aux fleurs Reine-Elizabeth-II, a flower market renamed in her honor following an official visit in 2014.

In Nigeria, students study at the Queen Elizabeth II Hall University in Ibadan. In St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Library can be found at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The United Kingdom is home to buildings like the Elizabeth Tower (housing Big Ben) and the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch. Additionally, there’s the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Queen Elizabeth II Dock in Merseyside, Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in Liverpool, and the Queen Elizabeth II Reservoir in Surrey.

To commemorate her jubilees, some UK buildings bear names associated with the specific jubilee, such as the Sapphire Jubilee Community Centre in Romford and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Park in Leicester.

Numerous schools worldwide are named in Queen Elizabeth II’s honor, including the Princess Elizabeth Junior School For Deaf Children in Victoria, Australia, and the Queen Elizabeth School for The Blind in Johor, Malaysia. Canada boasts no fewer than 19 schools named either ‘Queen Elizabeth’ or ‘Princess Elizabeth.’

Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Public Gardens renamed one of its walkways as The Queen Elizabeth II Walkway to celebrate her status as the longest-reigning British monarch. The Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner was named in her honor, though it ceased sailing in 2008.

Queen Elizabeth also has official roses named after her, including a pink floribunda rose created in 1953, as well as jubilee roses for her Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Ruby Jubilee in 1992 (which she did not publicly celebrate), and her Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Food items named for Queen Elizabeth II include Coronation Chicken, a dish created for her coronation in 1953, and King Charles III introduced his own special coronation recipe: coronation quiche in 2023. Additionally, there’s Queen Elizabeth Cake, a Canadian-made dessert.

The Elizabeth Sword is a specially-crafted sword within the Honours of Scotland, first presented to King Charles III in July 2023.

Various awards and prizes are named after Queen Elizabeth II, such as the Elizabeth Cross, granted posthumously to people killed in terrorist attacks, and several awards for business and enterprise in the United Kingdom. In horseracing, many races worldwide, including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at the Kentucky Derby, and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Japan, Hong Kong, India, and Malaysia, bear her name. In England, there are races like the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.

Recently, the UK government announced strict restrictions on using the name Queen Elizabeth II for businesses wanting to use it in memorials, with approval subject to a committee’s decision meeting stringent regulations.
