The opening sessions of the Enugu Tech Festival 2026 concluded on Monday with stakeholders highlighting the rapid transformation of Enugu from its historic coal-mining identity into an emerging centre for technology, innovation and experiential tourism in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Held under the theme “Coal to Code,” the festival brought together technology entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and creatives who examined how digital innovation is reshaping economic opportunities while preserving the cultural heritage long associated with the city popularly known as the Coal City.
Organisers said the theme reflects Enugu’s evolving economic narrative, moving from extractive industries toward knowledge-based development powered by startups, digital skills and innovation ecosystems. “Coal built Enugu’s foundation, but technology is defining its future,” a festival coordinator said during the opening address, noting that the initiative seeks to position the city as a destination where technology intersects with culture and hospitality.
Participants at the event emphasised that Enugu’s growing reputation as a tech-tourism destination is being driven by investments in innovation hubs, co-working spaces and youth-focused digital training programmes. According to speakers, visitors attending technology gatherings are increasingly engaging with local cultural attractions, cuisine and creative experiences, creating new value chains within the regional economy.
Officials representing the Enugu State Government said the administration is supporting policies aimed at attracting startups and digital investors while promoting tourism assets across the state. A government representative stated that “technology events such as this help reposition Enugu as a city open to innovation, enterprise and global collaboration.”
Industry experts noted that the convergence of technology and tourism reflects a broader national shift toward creative and digital economies as alternative growth drivers. Panel discussions throughout the opening sessions explored artificial intelligence adoption, startup financing, digital infrastructure and the role of young innovators in regional economic diversification.
Attendees also highlighted the importance of storytelling in redefining Enugu’s global image, arguing that the “Coal to Code” narrative provides a symbolic bridge between industrial heritage and future-facing innovation. One participant remarked that “Enugu is proving that legacy industries can evolve into digital ecosystems without losing cultural identity.”
With additional exhibitions, pitch sessions and networking engagements scheduled throughout the festival, organisers expressed optimism that the event would strengthen Enugu’s standing as a rising innovation hub while attracting investors and technology talent seeking opportunities beyond Nigeria’s traditional commercial centres.
